PRAYER

WHAT ARE WE PRAYING ABOUT?

I can't answer that for you, but I will tell you some of the things I will be praying for in my fasting: that God will lead me to the fullness of repentance and faith in the areas where I need it, that God will strengthen and sanctify me in my several callings as husband, father, and priest, that God will manifest his will in, through, and among the parish family of CTR, and that God will manifest his glory in his holiness, his goodness, his righteousness, his love, his grace, and his mercy. As the Bible instructs us in Joel 1:14, "Consecrate a fast. Call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the LORD your God and cry out to the LORD."

Therefore, let this be our time to assemble before God with fasting and prayer to discern his will for our parish family in our witness to the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

fASTING

CHRISTIAN FASTING IS NOT...

Christian fasting IS NOT what some might call "intermittent" fasting where we are solely focusing on the foods we do and do not eat, for the sake of our physical bodies. Again, our purposes for fasting are part of our spiritual disciplines as Christians.

CHRISTIAN FASTING IS...

As much as Jesus said, "When you fast...," meaning that he expects that his disciples will fast, the primary purpose of calling us to fast can be found in Matthew 6:33 when Jesus says, "Seek first the Kingdom of God and it's righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." In other words, God invites us to abstain from earthly food in order that we might first seek and receive heavenly manna.
