Lent

What is Lent?

Lent is a reminder of the 40 days that Jesus was in the desert being tempted by Satan, and it is the time we prepare for the great Easter season. How shall you prepare? How will you find purpose?

It is a season of:

Repentance – confessing our sins and returning to the God of forgiveness.

Fasting – the voluntary denial of a normal function for a spiritual purpose.

Devotion – increased activity in worship, prayer, and service towards others.

Find Purpose

Pray

We often think that Lent is about giving up something (wine, tv or chocolate) but it could also mean adding something. There are several different ways you can prepare and find purpose this Lent. One, is by adding prayer to your daily routine.

There are many different forms of prayer and it is something one can do at any time, any place and in any language. If you are not sure what and how to pray,

Fr. Chris in his Sunday School class on Feb 7th,  talks about the 2019 ACNA BCP and how it is a wonderful resource for prayer. It includes prayers for the time of the day, Family, the Church, Society, Healing to name just a few. If you don’t have a copy of the prayer book, you can download it. If you are in Fort Worth, you can also join us for prayer every Tuesday morning.

find purpose

fast

Besides prayer, another option for Lent is Fasting. Denying ourselves or giving up something during Lent is also known as fasting. Fasting isn’t just about a food denial, it could also be giving up an activity such as video games or tv to name two. Whatever is chosen, it should be a reminder of what Jesus went through and that we are walking with him to the cross.

find purpose

give

Giving isn’t just about treasure, it can also be about giving your time and talents. Look to your community to find ways you can give.

It was a custom in the early church for the church community to do an activity during Lent together. This year, we have chosen to support Love for the Least, one of our mission partners.  We will have envelopes and mite boxes at church, or you can find out more about our L4L on their web site  or give directly on this page. Then choose the donation designation of "Orphans - Northern Iraq" and add in the Notes section: "For the Widows and Orphans of Northern Iraq from Parishioner of Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church of Fort Worth, TX."

Whatever discipline you choose (prayer, fasting or giving), may you find purpose this Lent.
